Pam and Phil

Pam and Phil have only been living in town for 8 weeks now. They’re renting one of those new houses on Beech Close. Phil got a job teaching PE at the secondary school. Pam is staying home at the moment to look after their 3 year old son Thomas. Pam doesn’t have many friends yet. But she doesn’t mind … she’s got Thomas. This morning, at breakfast, after Phil had gone to work Thomas asked Pam -

“Where was I when you were a little girl Mummy?”

“You weren’t anywhere” Pam sensibly replied

“No …no …” (as if stupid Mummy didn’t understand the question) “No … where was I though?”

“When?”

“When you were a little girl?”

“You didn’t exist”

“What?”

“Don’t say what all the time Thomas please.”

“What?”

“Don’t say what all the time … it’s not polite”

Thomas was becoming increasingly frustrated by his Mum’s insubstantial answer. “But where was I? Tell me.”

“Nowhere Thomas … you didn’t exist … “

“Didn’t exist? Nonsense” Thomas had learned the word nonsense from somewhere and this seemed like a good time to use it.

“You hadn’t been thought about yet darling” offered Pam.

“Why?” And after a long pause …. “Why Mummy?”

“Because … because … well me and Daddy didn’t know each other then so we couldn’t …”

“What?”

“Stop saying what … so we couldn’t … make you”. That was a good answer thought Pam as she tried to finish her toast. “Eat your breakfast”

“Did you and Daddy make me?”

“Yes …”

“…How?”

“…sort of. Are you eating those Rice Krispies or shall I give them to the cat”

“I’m eating them!” shouted a furious Thomas. “Can I make a brother? Mummy?”

“Would you like one?” Pam looked at her beautiful son’s beautiful eyes

“I’d like one. Can we make one today?”

“It’s not quite that simple”

“When Daddy comes home?”

“I’ll ask him”

“Will he be too tired Mummy?”

Pam sighed. “Probably… He probably will be yes.” She stroked her son’s cheek. “Eat your krispies”
